EMERGENCY MEASURES CANNOT FLOUT DEMOCRACY

BRUSSELS, MARCH 31 /SRNA-Reuters/ - The European Commission warned today member states that emergency measures governments adopted to fight the coronavirus cannot undercut democracy.

“It is of utmost importance that emergency measures are not at the expense of fundamental principles and values. Democracy cannot function without free and independent media,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.

She has said that all emergency measures must be limited to what is necessary and strictly proportioned.

“They must not last indefinitely. Governments must make sure that such measures are subject to regular scrutiny,” Ursula von der Leyen said after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban secured the indefinite right to rule by decree. /end/sg
