RUSSIA FULLY SUPPORTING DAYTON STATUS OF SRPSKA

BANJALUKA, OCTOBER 27 /SRNA/ - Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that Russia, as one of the guarantors of the Dayton Peace Accords, fully supports the Dayton status of Republika Srpska and its constitutional powers and that the presence of the Office of the High Representative, whose role was exhausted a long time ago, should be revised.

Lavrov has said that Russia and Srpska are linked by close historical and cultural ties.

“We really appreciate brotherly understanding that exists between us,” Lavrov told the Glas Srpske daily.

He has said that Russia does not see any practical need for the high representative in BiH, adding that his role was exhausted a long time ago.

Lavrov has said that there are no sufficient reasons for talks on revising the Dayton Accords, which has been successfully securing peace, security and stability in BiH and the region for more than a quarter of a century.

“Moreover, the value of the Peace Accords is in the fact that it specified the internal organization of BiH, delimiting the sphere of responsibilities between levels of authorities, determined the constitutional status of the two entities, guaranteed the equal status of the three constituent peoples, secured for a verified scheme for the realization of their national rights, including the right to veto to protect the vital national interest. Encroaching upon these basic postulates means undermining the foundations of BiH’s statehood,” Lavrov said.

He has stressed that any change to the Dayton Peace Accords is acceptable exclusively as a result of agreement between the three constituent peoples, in keeping with the stipulated procedure.

“That which really should be revised is the presence of the Office of the High Representative,” Lavrov said. /end/sg
