MEMORIAL TO DOCTOR MIODRAG LAZIĆ UNVEILED
EAST ILIDŽA, JANUARY 9 /SRNA/ - Today, on the occasion of the Republic Day - January 9, a memorial to doctor Miodrag Lazić was unveiled in East Ilidža, who, working as a surgeon in the war hospital "Žica" in Blažuj, left an indelible mark on the entire Republika Srpska.
The head of the municipality of East Ilidža Marinko Božović said that Dr. Lazić, with his actions, indebted entire Republika Srpska, especially Ilidža people. "Doctor Lazić will stand eternal guard here, on the promenade named after him, for his people from Ilidža; we are here today and we bow to his sacrifice," said Božović during the ceremony, which was also attended by Lazić's family, as well as a delegation from Niš, the city where this great humanist lived. Goran Šehovac, a member of the Presidency of the War Veterans Organisation of Republika Srpska, emphasized that Republika Srpska is being preserved by the culture of remembrance and the nurturing of tradition. "If there is no culture of remembrance and tradition, there will be no Republika Srpska. We are here today to commemorate and not forget it. Once we are gone, our children will be there; once our children are gone, their children will be there," said Šehovac noting Republika Srpska will be eternal. Nataša Stanković, head of the Pantelej City Municipality in Niš, with which the East Ilidža Municipality maintains fraternal relations, says the memorial unveiled today is a symbol of the courage and love that Doctor Lazić gave to the people of the eastern part of Srpska. "This is a memorial to some times that should never be forgotten! Long live Republika Srpska! Long live Serbia," said Stanković and congratulated the Republic Day. The memorial to Doctor Miodrag Lazić is located on the promenade named after this great humanist. The famous Serbian surgeon Miodrag Lazić, who saved lives in Republika Srpska Krajina and Republika Srpska during the 1990s wars, died on April 14, 2020. In August 1991, he left his position as a surgeon in Niš and headed to the then Republika Srpska Krajina. As a surgeon, he participated in the breakthrough of the corridor in June 1992, and then volunteered at the "Koran" war hospital in Pale, Republika Srpska. He is one of the founders of the war hospital "Žica" in Blažuj near Sarajevo, right on the front line. He stayed there for a full 40 months, as the only surgeon in the area of what was then Srpsko Sarajevo, where he did more than 3,500 surgeries under full anesthesia.
