STUDENT SUCCESSFULLY TREATED, NO DANGER TO PUBLIC

FOČA, NOVEMBER 4 /SRNA/ – A student from India has fully recovered from typhoid fever after undergoing appendectomy and antibiotic therapy at the University Hospital in Foča and has been discharged for home treatment, it was announced today at a press conference held at the Faculty of Medicine in Foča.

Professor of Epidemiology at the Faculty of Medicine Biljana Mijović said that the typhoid fever was caused by the Salmonella typhi bacterium and was brought into the country, since the disease had already been detected in the student's home country on September 20, when she was examined and diagnosed with a mild form of typhoid fever. "She received appropriate antibiotic therapy in accordance with medical protocol in India, and arrived in Foča at the beginning of October. About ten days ago, she developed symptoms of fever and abdominal pain," said Mijović. She emphasized that it was extremely important that local doctors recognized the illness, which had not been seen in the area in recent memory. "We make an effort to train our medical staff to consider various diseases that may not be present here, and this student came from a region where this disease is endemic," Mijović said. The patient had to undergo an emergency appendectomy, which, according to Mijović, saved her life. After surgery and therapy, no traces of Salmonella were found in her test results, meaning the student is no longer contagious. "Samples were also taken from her close contacts, and all results came back negative, which means the risk of the disease spreading is zero," Mijović said. All necessary measures have been taken to prevent any spread of the disease among the local population, and hygiene standards at the Faculty, which are already high, have been raised to an even higher level.
