DOBOJ FIRST WORLD WAR CAMP EXHIBITION OPENS IN PALE
PALE, NOVEMBER 24 /SRNA/ – An exhibition on the Doboj camp and the suffering of Serb civilians during the First World War, through which more than 45,000 Serbian detainees passed, opened today at the High School Center in Pale.
The exhibition focuses on the Doboj camp, where, according to historians, more than 10,000 people perished. It is organized by the municipal Veterans' Organization, the Pale High School Center and the elementary schools Mokro, Pale and Srbija. Borislav Vlačić, director of the Pale High School Center, told reporters that the goal of the exhibition is to rescue from oblivion the suffering of the Serbian people, which continued throughout the 20th century during both world wars. Vlačić explained that the Doboj camp was opened in the spring of 1915, where ancestors from the surrounding areas, mostly from the Sarajevo district, Rogatica, central Podrinje, and the Romanija mountains - were imprisoned and tortured. He said the exhibition consists of 13 panels presenting historical facts, photographs, and icons of the Doboj martyrs. Marija Lučić, a student of the High School Center and curator of the exhibition, explained that the Doboj camp was established at the very beginning of the First World War in 1915, and that prisoners were subjected to inhumane conditions and killed in various brutal ways. She added that the Serbian people have always been a target, and every effort was made to eradicate and destroy them in this region. "Today, it is important that younger generations remember, honor, and respect these events, so that they are not repeated and so we remain worthy of the names of our ancestors," Lučić said. The Day of the Suffering of the Doboj Martyrs will be observed on December 27, when liturgies will be held in the Serbian Orthodox Churches in Pale.
