THE ZEC FAMILY MURDER ONE OF THE EVIDENCES OF IMPUNITY FOR CRIMES AGAINST SERBS
BELGRADE, DECEMBER 7 /SRNA/ – Miodrag Linta, the head of the Association of Serbs from the Region, says that the monstrous murder of the Zec family in Zagreb 34 years ago is one of many pieces of evidence of the impunity for mass crimes against Serbs in Croatian cities that were not war-affected.
Linta emphasized that the killing of the Serb Zec family on December 7, 1991, in Zagreb was not an isolated incident or exception, but a systematic occurrence and an expression of the anti-Serb policy led by the pro-Ustasha regime of Franjo Tuđman, aimed at creating Croatia with few or no Serbs. He noted that regarding this crime, none of the perpetrators were legally convicted, even though they were identified and admitted to this criminal act. Linta recalled a report from the UN Secretary-General’s envoy from May 1993, stating that over 251,000 Serbs were expelled from Croatia outside Krajina, and in the vast majority of cases, the commanders and perpetrators were not prosecuted, or if prosecuted, none were convicted. He assessed that Croatia remains trapped in a dark past because it refuses to confront the mass and systematic crimes committed against Serbs in many Croatian cities as well as in the Krajina region. Linta reiterated the request for Serbia to establish a Memorial Centre for Serb Victims in the former Yugoslavia as a state institution, which would collect data on the mass suffering of Serbs in the 1990s, preserve the memory of the suffering of the Serb people, and inform local and international audiences of the established facts. Mihajlo Zec /38/, his wife Marija /36/, and their twelve-year-old daughter Aleksandra were murdered 34 years ago in Zagreb. The crime was committed by members of Croatian police special units known as the “Merčepovci” and “Jesenje kiše,” commanded by the war criminal Tomislav Merčep, the Association of Serbs from the Region reported.
