KOVAČEVIĆ: EU MUST CLARIFY ITS POSITION ON BiH
BANJA LUKA, DECEMBER 15 /SRNA/ – The key question that the EU must address is where it stands when it comes to BiH, SNSD spokesperson Radovan Kovačević has stated today.
Speaking at a press conference in Banja Luka, Kovačević asked whether European standards meant that, in violation of the Constitution and beyond what it explicitly provided for, an unelected foreign individual could impose and enact laws, and whether this represented the European rule of law. “If this is part of the European standards and the rule of law we constantly hear about from EU representatives, then we do not want to be on that path. But if it is not, then we expect a clear condemnation of such practices and for the EU to become our ally in ensuring that European standards and the rule of law take root in BiH, and in combating both this practice and its consequences, which run counter to European principles,” Kovačević stressed. He wanted to know in which EU country it would be possible for an unelected foreign individual, with no connection to that country, no concern for its future, no invitation, no appointment, and no mandate, to replace parliament and impose laws. “We, as passive recipients, consumers, and nodding spectators to this kind of disgrace and hypocrisy, will never agree to that. If you truly support European standards in BiH, as you claim, then we do as well. But if you say that in all EU countries only parliaments can adopt laws, while in BiH it is acceptable for an unnamed foreigner with no ties to the country to impose legislation, then that is a serious problem,” underlined Kovačević, also a Serb delegate in the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly. He said that Republika Srpska is asking the EU to clearly state its position, and if it supports European standards, to act as an ally in jointly eliminating the negative consequences of such practices from the legal and political life of BiH.
