LINTA: MARK APRIL 10 AS DAY OF COMMEMORATION FOR NDH GENOCIDE VICTIMS

BELGRADE, APRIL 10 /SRNA/ – The President of the Association of Serbs from the Region Miodrag Linta has advocated for Serbia to declare April 10 as a Day of Remembrance and Mourning for the genocide committed against Serbs in the Independent State of Croatia /NDH/.

"Every April 10, a commemorative academy should be held, and Serbia should pause for two minutes on that day. At the sound of sirens and church bells, citizens would observe two minutes of silence in the streets, at workplaces, and in other locations and students in schools would pay tribute to the Serbian victims of genocide in the NDH," Linta stated. He explained that his initiative to designate this date as a day of mourning is based on the fact that immediately after the establishment of the NDH, the implementation began of a long-prepared plan to exterminate and destroy the Serb population across the territory of Croatia, BiH, and Srem up to Zemun, with the aim of creating an ethnically pure Greater Croatia. Pointing out that Israel similarly marks Holocaust Remembrance Day each year, Linta said that on this occasion flags at state institutions would be flown at half-mast, according to a statement from the Association of Serbs from the Region. He added that primary and secondary schools would hold a dedicated class, while radio and television stations would broadcast appropriate programming on the topic of genocide. "All planned cultural and sports events would be adjusted to the Day of Remembrance and Mourning," Linta said. He also stressed that Serbia should adopt a resolution on the genocide against Serbs, Jews and Roma in the NDH and establish a memorial center dedicated to the victims. "The goal of the proposed measures is to systematically nurture a culture of remembrance and to begin an organized and active struggle for the recognition of genocide against our people in the international community," Linta noted. He concluded that without historical context it is not possible to understand the events of the 1990s either.
