ARBUTINA: USTASHA SYMBOLS WILL BE REMOVED FROM LUBURIĆ’S GRAVE

BELGRADE, APRIL 22 /SRNA/ – The director of the Museum of Genocide Victims Bojan Arbutina has stated today that he had received assurances from the Spanish Government representatives that Ustasha symbols would be removed from the grave of one of the greatest criminals of the WWII, Vjekoslav Maks Luburić, who was directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Serbs in the NDH.

"During the last night's talks held with representatives of the Spanish Government, we received assurances, since Luburić's son said that he was unable to remove the coat of arms, that the Spanish Government will independently remove these symbols," Arbutina said at the opening of the exhibition "Jasenovac – A Lasting Warning" at the Belgrade City Library. He thanked Spain's Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, which had been in continuous communication with the Museum of Genocide Victims for a year and a half regarding this issue. "With the help of that ministry, we managed that the Spanish Government made decision on April 14 of this year to remove the Ustasha symbol from the grave of one of the greatest butchers and criminals of the WWII, Vjekoslav Maks Luburić, who was directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Serbs in the NDH," Arbutina said. According to the decision of the Spanish Government, all Ustasha symbols will be removed from the grave of the manager of the NDH camp system and one of the most notorious Ustasha commanders, Vjekoslav Maks Luburić, known as The Butcher, and a plaque will be installed explicitly listing his crimes during the Second World War. The decision was made ahead of the 57th anniversary of his killing and the 81st anniversary of the breakout of camp inmates from the Jasenovac camp.
