BAR-ILAN: SERBS AND JEWS KNOW HOW TO PRESERVE IDENTITY THROUGH DIFFICULT HISTORICAL VICTORIES
BELGRADE, MAY 14 /SRNA/ – Avivit Bar-Ilan, Israel's ambassador to Belgrade, stated that Israel and Serbia are countries that understand well what resilience means, and that both societies know how to preserve their identity and hope through difficult historical victories.
"Perhaps that is precisely why the connection between Israelis and Serbs is so natural and sincere," Bar-Ilan cited in an op-ed for Belrade-based daily Politika on the occasion of this year's celebration of Israel's Independence Day. Marking 78 years since the proclamation of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948, she emphasized that the event represents for the Jewish people the fulfillment of a centuries-old dream, a return to their homeland, and life in freedom and independence after a long exile. Bar-Ilan stated that Israel is celebrating 78 years of independence with pride, but also with sincere and deep gratitude toward its friends, stressing that Serbia has stood by Israel not only in words, but also through actions and spirit. "Through diplomatic relations, economic cooperation, the fact that Belgrade became a second home to Israeli sports teams, as well as through the warmth and hospitality of the residents, the friendship between our countries has become more visible and stronger than ever," Bar-Ilan stated. Recalling that the first Strategic Dialogue between Serbia and Israel was held in Israel two weeks ago, she assessed that the friendship between the two countries has grown stronger over the years. "I am convinced that the years ahead will deepen cooperation between our countries in diplomacy, economy, innovation, culture, science, and ties between people. On Independence Day, my wish is simple: that our region, and the entire world, may have more peace, more understanding, and more renewal," Bar-Ilan said.
