MECHANISM HAS SHOWN THAT INTERESTS OF GREAT POWERS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN LEGAL STANDARDS THE UN STANDS FOR
BELGRADE, MAY 14 /SRNA/ - Darko Mladić, the son of General Ratko Mladić, told SRNA that the decision of the Hague Mechanism not to allow his father, Ratko Mladić, to be transferred to Serbia for medical treatment is cynical, and that it has unfortunately been shown that politics and the interests of great powers that established this UN body still take precedence over any legal standards that the United Nations formally stands for.
"In practice, unfortunately, they are implemented selectively and in a way that suits other countries that influence the work of the judges," Darko Mladić said. He noted that Judge Nyamba issued a dissenting opinion stating that Ratko Mladić should be released, and that one of the judges consulted by the President of the court, Judge Santana, even said it would be “a pity for him to be separated from those doctors who have been taking such good care of him for so long.” "This body, which presents itself as a top institution for the protection of rights, is in fact just a tool in the hands of powers that are making nations around the world suffer," Mladić added. He said that the defense will consider its next steps, and once it has analyzed everything, it will have to take some action. Darko Mladić is currently in The Hague with his daughter, and tomorrow they will visit his father in the detention hospital, where he has been for two years, bedridden and under palliative care. The Hague Mechanism today rejected the defense’s request for Ratko Mladić to be released for medical treatment in Serbia due to his serious, life-threatening health condition. The Mechanism stated that the doctors who treated him for urinary infections after he suffered a stroke, and who, according to the defense, did not detect the stroke a month before he later suffered a second one, are the best possible doctors providing him with the best possible care.
