CANADIAN TESTS POSITIVE FOR HANTAVIRUS

TORONTO, MAY 16 /SRNA/ - A Canadian has tested positive for hantavirus and is currently in isolation, the government of the Canadian province of British Columbia announced.

British Columbia’s chief medical officer, Bonnie Henry, confirmed that the Canadian citizen tested positive for hantavirus after leaving a cruise ship affected by the Andes strain of the virus. She said that the patient began developing mild symptoms two days ago, including fever and headache. The person was taken to a hospital in Victoria for testing, which returned a positive result. The test will need to be confirmed by a microbiology laboratory in Winnipeg, but officials said the person is being treated as a positive case. He remains in hospital in isolation and is believed to be in stable condition.
