KARAN: REMEMBRANCE OF THE VICTIMS OF THE CRIME IN STARI BROD OBLIGES US TO BE THE GUARDIANS OF TRUTH

BANJA LUKA, MAY 30 /SRNA/ - The President of Republika Srpska, Siniša Karan, stated that the Drina River is a silent witness to one of the most horrific crimes against Serbs in the Second World War, when in the spring of 1942, members of Jure Francetić's Ustasha units killed thousands of innocent Serbs.

"Its waters still remind us today of their suffering, but also carry a warning that such a brutal crime must not be forgotten or kept silent. Stari Brod near Višegrad is a place where thousands of civilians, women, children, and the elderly were brutally murdered, simply because they were Serbs and of the Orthodox faith," Karan pointed out for SRNA on the occasion of the 84th anniversary of the crime in Stari Brod and Miloševići against more than 6,000 Serbs of the Sarajevo-Romanija region, who were killed by Jure Francetić's Ustashas. The President of Srpska emphasized that this crime remains a permanent warning of how far hatred, intolerance, and ideologies that call for the extermination of a people can lead. "It is our duty to preserve the truth about the suffering of the Serbian people, to respectfully remember the martyrs of Stari Brod, but also to tell future generations about the horrors the Serbian people went through in the 20th century. The remembrance of the innocent victims of the crime in Stari Brod and Miloševići obliges us to be the guardians of truth, freedom, and the right to live in peace and dignity," stated Karan.
