SOFIJA ILIĆ BALKAN KARATE VICE-CHAMPION

BILEĆA, JUNE 7 /SRNA/ – In just five years of training, young karate athlete Sofija Ilić has managed to reach the podium at the region’s most prestigious competitions, proving that great talents come from Herzegovina, even though she could not have imagined it when she first put on a karate gi and entered the training hall of the Hercegovac Karate Club.

The talented 11-year-old from Bileća recently won a silver medal at the Balkan Children’s Karate Championship in Istanbul, once again confirming that she ranks among the top young karate competitors in the Balkans in her age category. The path to the silver medal was far from easy. The Balkan Championship gathers the region’s best young karate athletes, and the competition grows stronger every year. “I knew it was very difficult to win a medal at the Balkan Championship. I had already been a Balkan champion in my category once before, so there was hope that I could win another medal. The competition was tough because I faced very strong opponents,” Sofija told SRNA. Her love for karate began thanks to her older sisters, who were her first role models. “I have been training in karate since I was six years old. My love for karate came from my older sisters, who are exemplary karate athletes,” Sofija told SRNA. For Sofija, the medal represents much more than a sporting achievement. “By winning that medal, all the work and effort I have put in with my coaches at the club was put to the test. It means a lot to me and gives me additional motivation to continue,” she said. Although only 11 years old, she has already competed in four Balkan Championships, both individually and as part of a team, and has amassed an impressive collection of medals. “I have won all three individual medals; my favourite is the gold medal from Bar in 2023. This silver medal is very close to that one in importance. I should also mention that our kata team became Balkan champions in 2024, also in Istanbul,” Sofija noted. Her family provides strong support throughout her sporting journey, especially her sisters, who best understand the sacrifices and responsibilities that top-level sports require. “They are my greatest support and mean a lot to me,” the young karate athlete said. Although many years of athletic development still lie ahead, Sofija already knows what goals she wants to pursue. “I want to continue training and improving, and eventually pass on my knowledge and skills to younger generations,” stressed this young Bileća girl. Sofija’s success is not only the result of talent, but also of dedicated work, discipline, and the support of her family and coaches. The silver medal from Istanbul is yet another confirmation that great sporting talents come from small Herzegovina, and that the biggest challenges and achievements still lie ahead for Sofija Ilić.
