NEW YORKERS SAY EXHIBIT SHED NEW LIGHT ON SERB SUFFERING
NEW YORK, JULY 13 /SRNA/ – Many New Yorkers say they were unaware of the suffering experienced by Serbs until they saw billboard displays as part of a campaign by the Memorial Center of Republika Srpska, which prompted them to learn more about the real situation.
According to a statement issued by the Memorial Center, Nicole Richards, a New York resident, said she had known little about the Serbian people and the hardships they endured during the wars in BiH and the former Yugoslavia. "I know tennis player Novak Đokovic, but I didn't know about the suffering that took place there. This campaign definitely opened my eyes and encouraged me to look deeper into what happened and the hardships the Serb people have faced," Richards said. Another New Yorker, Lourdes Sosa, said she found it valuable to learn about Serbian history. "I didn't know much about it. It's very important that we understand history so we don't repeat the mistakes of the past," Sosa said. Serbs living in New York said the campaign was an effective way to raise awareness among Americans of the suffering endured by the Serb people. Denis Bojić, director of the Memorial Center of Republika Srpska, said the campaign represents the institution's most significant international outreach effort since its establishment. The campaign marks the first time that the story of Serb wartime suffering has been presented in the United States through a large-scale international multimedia campaign in New York.
