XI: BEIJING AND WASHINGTON SHOULD BUILD PEACE BY STRENGTHENING TRUST

WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 25 /SRNA/ – Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China and the USA can and should achieve joint victory through practical cooperation and build peace by strengthening mutual trust.

"China and the United States should promote each other through healthy competition and properly manage differences while seeking common interests in order for strategically stable relations between the two countries to better serve not only their peoples but also the peoples of all countries around the world," Xi said after meeting US President Donald Trump at the White House. He noted that the presidents of China and the United States had made reciprocal visits within less than six months, which was unprecedented in the history of China-US relations. "President Trump and I maintain communication in various ways and jointly steer the large ship of China-U.S. relations. In May this year, we agreed to build constructive and strategically stable China-US relations," Xi stated. He emphasized that this new position reflects the reality of China-U.S. relations as well as expectations for the future, representing an important step toward finding the right way for the two countries' relations. "We need to turn this vision into action and strive for relations in which cooperation is the foundation, competition is moderate, differences are under control, and peace is achievable. We need to find the right way for two major powers to coexist," Xi stressed. He said that the economic-trade teams of the two countries had held a new round of consultations and reached a new common arrangement, which was good news for industries and citizens in both countries, as well as for the global economy. "Cooperation is a two-way street. Stability in China-USA economic and trade relations requires expanding the list of areas of cooperation while shortening the list of problems. As long as the principles of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit are upheld, it is possible to find solutions to problems," Xi said. The Chinese president expressed hope that both sides would meet each other halfway, adhere to the principle of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, and promote the continued, stable, and positive development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations. Xi noted that China and the United States are major countries in the field of artificial intelligence. "There is competition between the two sides, but more importantly, they can cooperate. They should make use of their respective strengths rather than erect barriers against each other," Xi said. He stressed that the two sides could continue dialogue on artificial intelligence, exchange views on its risks and benefits, and jointly prevent its misuse and harmful applications. "We need to maintain human control over artificial intelligence technology and adhere to the principles of putting people first and using technology for the common good, so that artificial intelligence serves the advancement of humanity," Xi stressed. He stated China's position on preserving national unity and territorial integrity was clear. "China hopes that the USA will maintain the correct position against `Taiwan independence` and handle the Taiwan issue carefully, in order to lay a solid foundation for strategic cooperation between China and the USA and for bilateral relations development," Xi said. Trump said that President Xi's state visit to the United States was a major visit. "Both the United States and China are great powers, and I am a good friend of President Xi Jinping. We maintain deep and close communication. Under our leadership, relations between the United States and China will certainly improve," Trump said. He emphasized that the new round of consultations between the two countries’ economic and trade teams had produced new results. "Both sides should continue dialogue in order to reach better agreements. Artificial intelligence concerns the future of humanity, and the United States and China should maintain dialogue and strengthen cooperation on this issue," Trump said. The two presidents also exchanged views on important international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. They confirmed that they would mutually support the successful hosting of the informal meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders this year and the G20 Leaders' Summit, the China Media Group reports.
