PREPARATIONS BEGIN AT ČERKEZOVAC FOR RADIOACTIVE WASTE CENTER

ZAGREB, APRIL 1 /SRNA/ – Ground leveling is underway at Trgovska Gora at the site designated for the construction of a radioactive waste management center, and eight structures have so far been demolished at the location, SRNA was told by Croatia’s Fund for the Financing of the Decommissioning and Disposal of Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant.

As they explained, this is the final activity within the project of removing existing facilities and will last until June at the latest. The Fund stated that a request to initiate an environmental impact assessment procedure regarding the establishment of the radioactive waste management center at the Čerkezovac site on Trgovska Gora will soon be submitted to Croatia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition. They added that upon receiving the request, the Ministry will review the study and appoint a commission. “If the commission determines that the study is comprehensive and professionally grounded, it will be forwarded for public consultation,” the Fund said, adding that the study will be available on both their website and that of the Ministry. Asked about the hearing scheduled before the Secretariat of the Espoo Convention in Geneva on May 15, at the request of BiH, the Fund said its representatives would attend the meeting. “We believe that all activities undertaken so far regarding the establishment of the radioactive waste management center at Čerkezovac are in line with Croatian and international legal frameworks governing radioactive waste management and environmental impact,” the Fund stated. Croatia plans to store radioactive waste from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, as well as existing institutional waste, at Trgovska Gora in the municipality of Dvor, right on the border with BiH.
