JELIĆ: SOCIAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM PRAISED IN AUSTRIA
BANJA LUKA, MARCH 25 /SRNA/ - Members of the Banja Luka Down Syndrome Center completed a seven-day stay in Austria, where the program for social rehabilitation, independence, and vocational training was presented, earning numerous praises and recognitions in that country, the President of the Down Syndrome Center Zoran Jelić told SRNA.
He emphasized that individuals with Down syndrome from Republika Srpska were presented in the best light in Austria and even had the opportunity to box and win. "Fifteen of our members participated in boxing training and matches, and we are the first boxing club in Europe whose members are individuals with Down syndrome," Jelić said, noting that Igor Miketić, the President of the Austrian Boxing Federation, was appointed as the first president of the club. Jelić emphasized that these activities were carried out under the patronage of the Representative Office of Republika Srpska in Austria and the boxing federations of Austria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria, as well as the World Boxing Federation and its president, Boris Van der Vorst. "The gathering of individuals with Down syndrome from Republika Srpska, Austria, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Hungary represents the largest ‘living inclusion’ in Austria and was even welcomed by Vienna’s Mayor, Michael Ludwig. He recognized the work of the Banja Luka Down Syndrome Center and stated that this should become a tradition," Jelić said. Jelić also noted that, with the support of the Representative Office of Republika Srpska in Vienna, an agreement was signed with an Austrian organization that provides social and healthcare services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Representatives of this organization are interested in the programs and services of the Banja Luka Down Syndrome Center, which will now be made possible through the signed agreement.
